Get Ideas For Spring Gardening

Jan 13, 2020

Spring is not far off, and gardeners are making plans for the new planting season. Fort Bend County Libraries’ Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library will have two programs in January for backyard gardeners who would like to learn more about planning and maintaining beautiful lawns and gardens.

On Monday, January 6, Fort Bend County Master Gardener and Vegetable Specialist Ralph Fuller will present “Spring Vegetable Gardening,” from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library.

Fuller will provide an overview of spring vegetable gardening. Before the vegetables can appear, preparations must be made. Learn how to plan the lay-out and location of your garden for optimal sun, shade, and drainage. Get tips on container-gardening, row-gardening, and on preparing your garden with soil amendments and compost.

Fuller will also talk about varieties of plants that grow well in the area, and their growing seasons. Learn about Integrated Pest Management practices and how to set up a maintenance schedule for watering, fertilizing, weeding, and pest- and disease-control measures.

On Monday, January 13, Fort Bend County Master Gardener Deborah Birge will present “New Fruit Trees for Fort Bend County,” from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library.

Birge will talk about varieties of fruit trees that can thrive in the Gulf Coast climate. Hear about proper planting techniques and recommended maintenance tips to encourage fruit production, such as pruning, feeding, and watering. Birge will also talk about new fruit trees that are available, as well as some of the varieties that will be at the Annual Master Gardener Fruit-Tree Sale.

Birge has been a master gardener for more than 15 years and holds specialist certifications in Citrus Culture, Home Fruit Production, and First-Detector Plant Disease.

The Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library is located at 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

The programs are free and open to the public. For more information, see the Fort Bend County Libraries website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), or call the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library (281-633-4675) or the library system’s Communications Office (281-633-4734).
