LEARN KNITTING, EMBROIDERY, & OTHER ARTISTIC CRAFTS

Aug 14, 2019

Relax this summer by discovering a new hobby, or share ideas with other crafty folks! Fort Bend County Libraries will present introductory classes in August for individuals who would like to learn more about knitting, cross-stitch embroidery, or other artistic crafts.

In August, these libraries have special activities planned for craft enthusiasts.

Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South, Fulshear

Knitting for Beginners – Saturday, August 3, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. In this hands-on adult craft class, library staff member Marie Picon will describe essential tools used for knitting, such as different yarns that can be used for varying effects, and how knitting needles differ from other types of needles. Those attending the program will learn the basic knit stitch, knitting terminology, and pattern reading, while beginning a simple project. Materials for the class will be provided thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library. No previous knitting experience is necessary.

Folded-Book Art: Spaceship – Tuesday, August 6, 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Library staff will demonstrate how to take an old book and make words and images by folding the pages. No cutting, gluing, or special equipment is needed for this simple craft project. The project is a fun way to re-use old books and give them a new purpose. The resulting piece of art can be a great gift for someone who loves to read. At this session, participants will learn how to fold a simple rocket. This activity is suitable for adults and older teens. Registration required.

Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway

Craft Your Heart Out! – Saturday, August 10, 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. This monthly program, which meets on the second Saturday of every month, is for people who enjoy all kinds of crafts. The first 45 minutes of the program will be devoted to knitting and crocheting. For the last half hour of the program, guest speakers will introduce a different hobby each month. Learn new skills in knitting and crocheting, while sharing in the camaraderie of others who enjoy similar hobbies. People of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any types of crafts are invited to attend. Those attending this program should bring their own supplies for their craft.

Sienna Branch Library, 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd, Missouri City

Sienna Art Club: Water-Activated Art – Wednesday, August 14, 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This monthly program is for people who enjoy all kinds of crafts. The guest artisan in August will demonstrate how to use stencils to make designs that reveal themselves when wet. People of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any types of crafts are invited to attend. Bring a craft project and share experiences with others who are thinking about taking up a new hobby. Those attending this program should bring their own supplies for their craft.

Shibori Indigo Dyeing – Sunday, August 18, 1:00 to 3:00 pm. In this adult craft class, learn about the Japanese textile art known as Shibori indigo dyeing. Shibori is a resistance dyeing technique dating back to the 8th century in Japan. It typically involves taking fabric and manipulating it by folding or clamping it between boards, stitching and gathering it, or pleating and bounding it, and then dyeing it in a vat of indigo. Those attending the workshop will practice the binding techniques on squares of white cotton fabric and then take the pieces outside to dip them in the indigo dye.

This program is suitable for those aged 18 and above. Registration required.
