LGBTQ+ Pride Month Kicks Off in Columbus

Every year, June is celebrated as Pride Month, celebrating the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.  Pride month remembers the riots at The Stonewall Inn, which began on June 28, 1969, in response to repeated violent raids targeted at the bar’s LGBTQ+ customers; they lasted for six days and sparked what we now know as the Gay Rights Movement.

Those involved in the uprising could not have imagined the effect that week would have on LGBTQ+ rights throughout the country and around the world.  Since 1970, pride marches, parades, workshops, protests and other events have been organized worldwide to bring light to the violence, discrimination, and inequality faced by LGBTQ+ people around the globe. One of the participants of the stonewall riots, Sylvia Rivera recalled, “We were determined that evening that we were going to be a liberated, free community.”

Columbus TX LGBTQ+ is happy to carry on that legacy and pride to our very own small town and are pleased to present Columbus Pride 2022 at Courtyard Wine Bar (1014 Milam St) on Saturday, June 18 from 5-10PM. Enjoy music by DJ Stephen Jusko, Tasty Caribbean food truck, live entertainment, beer & wine, and more.  “We invite all members of the community to celebrate with us,” said a spokesperson for the group, “We are your neighbors; we are your friends.” Learn more at Facebook.com/ColumbusTXLGBTQ.
