Cy Creek Ends Mayde Creek’s Historic Season

By George Slaughter

The Mayde Creek magic of 2019 came to an end Thursday with a 35-14 loss to the Cy Creek in the area round of the playoffs.

The Cougars, now 8-4, will face the winner of the Beaumont West Brook-Strake Jesuit game, scheduled for Friday night.

The Cougars scored on their first four possessions of the game and never looked back. All its first-half touchdowns came on passes from senior quarterback Julian Uwadia. He was 18-for 28 passing for 331 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Mayde Creek offense, meanwhile, struggled throughout the game. It scored on a 2-yard run by junior running back Julius Loughridge with 2:16 remaining before halftime. Loughridge, the team’s leading rusher this season, finished the game with 58 yards on 16 carries.

The Cougars began the second half with another scoring drive, with senior running back Eddie Jimerson going in on a 2-yard run.

The Rams scored a final touchdown late in the game, when senior quarterback John Zalocha threw a 9-yard pass to senior wide receiver Tory Wilson.

Mayde Creek ends its season with a 9-3 mark, but the Rams and their fans can be proud of a truly remarkable season. Mayde Creek made the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season, when it finished 5-5. With last week’s win over Fort Bend Bush, the Rams won their first playoff game since 1997. The nine wins is the most achieved by the Rams since the 2007 season, when they finished 6-5.
