Over 1000 Affordable Housing Units Approved for Harris County

As Harvey Two Year Anniversary Nears
$90 Million in Disaster Recovery Funding Applied

Harris County Commissioners have given the green light to Harris County Project Recovery-Harvey to proceed with development plans of eight (8) multi-story affordable rental facilities in various locations throughout the county. The projects also vary in terms of those served, from families, to seniors, to homeless youth and those with mobility, hearing and vision impairments.

In January of 2019, the Harris County Community Services Department received over $200 million in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds to replenish Harris County’s shrinking affordable housing market. The first $90 million of these funds will cover the first phase of development.

“This is an historically high amount of new affordable units that we are able to add to the housing landscape in Harris County, thanks to this federal disaster funding. When rental units come off the market because of flooding rental prices go up, making our lower income population vulnerable to homelessness,” Daphne Lemelle, Director of Harris County Community Services said.
