As part of House Bill (HB) 3 which was passed by the 86th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, Katy Independent School District will transition from half-day to full-day pre-kindergarten (pre-k) for eligible students beginning with the 2019-20 school year.
Full-day classes for pre-k students will begin on August 14, 2019. Parents of preregistered pre-k students will receive a notification letter mailed on Tuesday, July 30, notifying them that their child is eligible to begin full day pre-k on the first day of school. Parents of Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) students will also receive a notification letter informing them that their PPCD child will begin half-day classes on the first day of school and will continue as half-day enrollees pending an Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) change of placement and determination if they are pre-k eligible.
In order to accommodate a full day of instruction, the District has expanded the number of campuses offering pre-k. “We are excited to have the opportunity to serve our youngest learners in a full-day setting,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Caskey. “As a result of this change, it is important that parents confirm their assigned pre-k campus along with their bell schedule,” added Caskey.
