Sen. Cruz: America Must Always Stand With the People of China and Their Demands for Freedom

Recognizes 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square massacre

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement recognizing the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre:

“Thirty years ago thousands of Chinese protestors gathered in Tiananmen Square demanding freedom. The Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army slaughtered them. To this day we don’t know how many perished on ‘that bloody dawn,’ as Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo described it. Today, the CCP continues its war against the people of China and brands entire religions and ethnicities as security threats to be imprisoned, brutally tortured, and if necessary murdered.

“The Party treats the rest of the world with similar disdain. It seeks to silence free speech in America and around the world while it steals technology and intimidates its neighbors. Xi Jinping threatens Taiwan with military invasion while eroding Hong Kong’s autonomy. Even so, the ghost of Tiananmen still haunts the Communist Party. Truth is stronger than lies, and light overcomes darkness. Dictators fear their people. There is power in reminding the Communist Party about this day. America must always stand with the people of China. We must never stop fighting for the democracy so many gave their lives for 30 years ago today.”
