Neglect, Abuse, and Violence Toward Children Rises in Harris County

Foster Care and Child Welfare Community Rallies for Child Abuse Prevention

HOUSTON, TX— Children in our communities are harmed, injured and victimized at troubling rates.  In 2017, there were 6,551 confirmed victims of child abuse in Harris County.  Sadly, this number continues to grow. In 2018, there were 6,961 children in Harris County confirmed as victims.  That’s nearly 7,000 children aged 0 to 17 suffering from neglect, abuse, and violence.  So why is this happening in the 4th largest city in the U.S.?  Some of the area’s leading child and family advocates will explain.  They will share the importance of prevention, the state of children’s well-being in Harris County, contributing factors to the rise in child abuse and the value of partnerships to promote strong and thriving families in our community. In observance of the children victimized, organizations and individuals will tie 6,961 blue ribbons along the fence line facing Memorial Drive.
