Sen. Cruz Tours U.S.-Mexico Border With President Trump

Participates in roundtable discussions with local border officials, highlights importance of securing the border with Fox News’ Sean Hannity

MCALLEN, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today joined President Donald Trump, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), and other local and Border Patrol officials to tour the U.S.-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley. During the tour, Sens. Cruz and Cornyn spoke with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, before meeting with mayors from the region and local stakeholders to discuss their priorities for border security.

At the roundtable discussion at the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector, Sen. Cruz highlighted the human tragedies that occur on the southern border and thanked law enforcement for their bravery.

“Illegal immigration produces tragedies every day,” Sen. Cruz said. “This is a fight the people of Texas and the American people want. They want the borders secure. They want the federal government to have the backs of the men and women in this room who are risking their lives to keep us safe. So thank you for highlighting this crisis. When we see politicians go on TV and say the border is secure and there is no crisis, they’re ignoring reality. They are ignoring the lives that are jeopardized each and every day. So thank you for leading this fight.”

During the tour, Sen. Cruz noted that securing the border is a priority of the American people.

“I think this trip was very valuable,” Sen. Cruz said to Hannity. “I was pleased to come down with the President to meet with border patrol but also to meet with victims whose family had lost their lives to illegal immigration, there are real human tragedies. And when you see Chuck Schumer and the Democrats force a government shutdown because they’re so adamantly opposed to securing the border, that’s really out of touch and it’s not where the American people are.”
