Offers Online Voter Training for Lawyers

Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan celebrates National Voter Registration Day today by making training for lawyers available online.

Ryan recently hosted a Continuing Legal Education session about voting issues that could be raised by government officials or members of the public.  It included an overview of the Texas Election Code and Voter ID laws. That seminar is now being offered free online for any lawyers who wish to view it.  CLE credit will be given.

“Voting is our basic American right and responsibility,” County Attorney Ryan said.  “We want to ensure that all Harris County citizens register to vote or update their registrations, if necessary.  I especially encourage young people who turn 18 before Election Day to register.  October 9th is the last day to register for the upcoming November election.”

Ryan will be participating in a press conference today at 11:30 am at Westbury High School, 11911 Chimney Rock Road with Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan, Board Trustee Wanda Adams, Westbury HS Principal Susan Monaghan, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector & Voter Registrar Ann Harris Bennett, Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 1 Rodney Ellis, Mi Familia Vota and NALEO to encourage 18 year olds to register to vote.

The Harris County Attorney’s Office is responsible for advising the County’s voter registrar and election officials and investigating voter misconduct.

Seventeen year olds may register to vote if they will turn 18 within two months and, once registered, may vote provided they are 18 years of age at the time they vote.

National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy.  It seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.  Since the holiday was founded in 2012, over 1.6 million voters have registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day.
