NAM Distributes Back To School Supplies To 2000 Students

HOUSTON— Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) was alive with smiles and excitement from families who picked up their school supplies on Saturday, August 4, 2018.  That excitement over supplies turns into eagerness for the first day of school, which is just around the corner.

Each year Northwest Assistance Ministries hosts a Back to School Drive.  Thanks to generous donations throughout the year, NAM can purchase school supplies for local children in need from kindergarten through 12th grade.

According to Debbie Peterson, Director of Emergency Basic Needs at NAM, support from our local community has been instrumental to the success of this program. “We couldn’t do what we do without all the help we receive from our corporate and community partners, congregations, supporters and NAM staff,” Peterson said. “Thanks to their continued support, NAM is able to help many children and families in need and we’re excited about being able to make a difference in their lives.”

This year, NAM handed out school supplies to 2,000 students on Saturday, August 4 and Monday, August 6. Over 1,000 families came to NAM to pick up the supplies their child will need to start school off on the right foot.

“When children have the tools they need to learn it opens up a realm of opportunities for their futures, and in turn, the community,” said Peterson. “We know how important it is for children to have school supplies and for families to have one less financial burden to worry about,” she continued.

Northwest Assistance Ministries is a non-profit, community-based social service agency that strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors. NAM provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention. During its last fiscal year, NAM touched the lives of more than 129,000 people through its many programs and services.
