Texas’ Water-Efficient Products and ENERGY STAR® Sales Tax Holidays: Lesser Known Facts

Holiday
While our office estimates Texas shoppers will save $10.7 million in state and local sales tax during the Memorial Day weekend, these tax holidays are still not widely known. (The Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday is only in its third year!) We’ve put together media resources in English and Spanish — downloadable graphics, audio and video — to make it easy for you to share with Texans.

We will also provide answers to frequently asked questionsabout the tax holidays on our social media channels starting Saturday. We’re sharing those with you here now.

  • Additional charges affect the final sales price — and taxability — of an eligible item! For example, an ENERGY STAR-labeled refrigerator with a sales price under $2,000 is normally eligible for the tax exemption. If added delivery and installation charges exceed $2,000, the item is no longer eligible for the exemption, and tax is due on the entire purchase.
  • WaterSense-labeled products purchased during the tax-free holiday can be used at your home OR business. Water-conserving items are only exempt when purchased for use in residential property.
  • All ENERGY STAR-labeled LED light bulbs are tax free during the holiday. Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs with or without the ENERGY STAR label qualify for exemption. And it’s true — there is no limit to the number of qualifying items you can purchase.

We hope you’ll continue sharing our posts on FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and Instagramthroughout the weekend. Have a great holiday!
