Sen. Cruz Issues Statement Regarding Dominican Republic’s Decision to Sever Diplomatic Relations With Taiwan

‘It is in America’s national interest to preserve Taiwan’s security and promote freedom in China…’

HOUSTON, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today issued the following statement regarding the Dominican Republic’s announcement earlier this week to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan:

“I am alarmed by the Dominican Republic’s decision to recognize the People’s Republic of China and sever relations with Taiwan. This move is the latest victory for Beijing in its campaign to erode Taiwan’s national security and democracy. Red China is using its vast economic resources to purchase allies from Caracas and Havana to Panama City and Santo Domingo. The developments call for a renewed commitment to bolster our Taiwanese allies bilaterally and in every forum available to us. It is in America’s national interest to preserve Taiwan’s security and promote freedom in China, and I will continue to urge the administration and my colleagues in Congress to work with me to ensure that those issues receive the priority they require.”
