Olson Applauds Executive Order To Support Our Veterans

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) today issued the following statement in support of President Trump’s Executive Order aimed at helping veterans transition from Uniformed Service to Civilian Life:

“Our military men and women risk their lives every day in defense of our freedom. Sadly, their service comes at a high price that includes a dangerous risk of mental health issues and suicide once they return home. As a veteran myself, I know how critical it is that we provide access to the tools for our veterans to successfully transition to civilian life. This Executive Order is an important step in the right direction. I thank President Trump for his commitment to our nation’s heroes.”

The Executive Order directs the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs to develop a Joint Action Plan within 60 days to provide access to mental health care and suicide prevention resources for all new veterans for at least one year following their discharge, separation or retirement. Within 180 days, the departments must update the Presidents on the progress, and propose any additional needed reforms. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 60 percent of new veterans previously did not qualify for this care.
