BASKETBALL ACTION … Phillips 66 Katy Classic

The 2017 Phillips 66 Katy Classic was what some might call, the last tune-up before District competition begins for the girls’ basketball teams. The four top three District 19-6A playoff teams, Katy, Taylor and Seven Lakes are the teams that Cinco Ranch, Tompkins, Morton Ranch and Mayde Creek will have to beat this year for a shot at the playoffs. At the Classic the Lady Tigers of Katy defeated Ellison, 56-47, lost to Colleyville Heritage 52-48, Wagner 53-48 and Dekaney 62-60

The Lady Mustangs of Taylor High School won four out of five games, defeating Channelview 74-34, College Station 60-37, Ellison 53-49 and Seven Lakes 63-60. Their lone loss was to Wagner, 61-43.

The Lady Spartans of Seven Lakes took the measure of Conroe 48-30, lost to Jersey Village 83-55, handily defeated District 19 opponent, Morton Ranch, 42-18, won a close game with Mansfield Legacy 71-69, and then lost to the Lady Mustangs of Taylor, 63-60. The Lady Spartans defeated Cy Woods for the Bronze Bracket Championship.

Tompkins took third place in the Gold Bracket, defeating Cy Springs 77-61

District play begins Dec. 8 for the girls’ teams at Seven Lakes, Tompkins, Katy, Taylor, Morton Ranch and Mayde Creek:

Seven Lakes – Tompkins, 7:00 p.m. at Seven Lakes High School

Katy – Taylor, 7:00 p.m. at Taylor High School

Morton Ranch – Mayde Creek, 7:00 p.m. at Morton Ranch High School

Cinco Ranch plays its first district game on Dec. 15 against Katy, 7:00 p.m., at Katy High School

For the boys, in the Gold Bracket at the Phillips 66 Classic, Tompkins took third place, 77-61. Morton Ranch was top team on the Consolation side defeating Westside 65-62. Katy took second place in the Silver Bracket, losing to Alief Taylor 69-59. Cinco Ranch took Consolation honors in the Silver Bracket. Seven Lakes captured the Bronze Medal defeating Cy Woods 83-57 and Mayde Creek took home Consolation honors, losing to Elsik, 70-55

District play for the boys tips off in January.
