Northwest Assistance Ministries has an Immediate Need for Volunteer Drivers for Meals on Wheels

Gerald has been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at Northwest Assistance Ministries for more than seven years

(Houston, May 16, 2017). Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) announced today they have an immediate need for volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels.

The announcement comes after the rapid expansion of the three sites served by NAM, Life Path Church (Bear Creek area) and Windwood Presbyterian Church. For the past 20 years, Meals on Wheels at NAM has served thousands of homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities by delivering hot and nutritious meals every day.

“It never ceases to amaze me how rapidly we have expanded our program,” explained Grace Jackson, Senior Services Director at NAM. “We are currently serving more than 700 people across 24 different zip codes and our need for volunteer drivers is greater than ever before. We continue to see a need in our community and we rely on volunteers to deliver these meals to hundreds of people that otherwise would go hungry. Volunteers are truly the lifeline these individuals have and we couldn’t do what we do without them,” Jackson said.

To get you started with volunteering for our Meals on Wheels program, please contact NAM’s Community Relations Coordinator, Courtney Frost-Tadlock at (281) 885-4604 or volunteer@namonline.org. NAM asks all that all potential volunteers attend volunteer orientation, so they can better understand their volunteer role within the organization.  Volunteer orientations are held the first Wednesday and third Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at:

Northwest Assistance Ministries

15555 Kuykendahl Road, Second floor

Houston, TX 77090

Requirements to volunteer for Meals on Wheels:

  • Be 18 years of age
  • Have a car
  • Have a valid driver’s license

The Community Relations Coordinator will provide an introduction and materials for the volunteers to complete during the volunteer orientation. Prospective volunteers will also enjoy a video that highlights the scope of NAM’s many programs and services. After the video, they will take a tour of NAM’s four-story building, so they can learn first-hand from current volunteers, program directors or NAM staff about current volunteer opportunities from each department.

Meals on Wheels delivers hot, well-balanced meals to the doors of seniors and other neighbors who are homebound because of disability or illness. By supporting their nutritional needs, this program helps participants maintain or improve their health, remain independent and stay in their homes for as long as possible. During fiscal year 2015-2016, Meals on Wheels provided 134,011 nutritious meals to 1,034 homebound seniors and disabled adults, serving on average 600 each weekday and 91 individuals on Saturdays.  Additionally, 93 low-income senior clients received monthly grocery deliveries to supplement their food budgets and 35 seniors received supplemental nutritional supplements as prescribed by their physicians.
