FEMA awards $3.3 million for Phase 1 of Fort Bend County Soil Stabilization Project

AUSTIN, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $3.3 million to the Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District #7 working with the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to fund Phase I of the Fort Bend County Soil Stabilization Project.

This project will provide a comprehensive approach to bank stabilization for the Brazos River by using low dams to alter the flow within the bend of the river and shift the current away from the outer bank. The river banks will be sloped and armored to withstand high velocities and rapid drawdown conditions.

The project is a part of FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and requires a 25 percent nonfederal match.

HMGP provides grants to local communities, states, federally recognized tribes and territories to implement hazard mitigation measures following a presidentially declared disaster.

The goal is to reduce overall risk to the population and structures from future hazard events, while also reducing reliance on federal funding in future disasters while supporting community resilience and self-reliance.
