Fort Bend County Libraries’ Local History and Genealogy department will present its 8th Annual Genealogy Symposiumon Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m., in the Meeting Room at George Memorial Library, located at 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Registration will begin at 9:00 am, and different lectures will be presented throughout the day
Professional genealogist and family-history blogger Donna M. Moughty will share her knowledge, experience, and insight on a variety of topics designed to help family-history buffs explore different avenues of genealogical research. Moughty maintains the blog Irish Family Roots and is the author of the Irish Quick Reference Guides.
The schedule for the library’s Genealogy Symposium is as follows:
- 9:30 am – “Which Port? When? From Where?” Learn how to determine which port an ancestor might have departed from, and in which port they arrived.
- 11:00 am – “Sources for Irish Research” Learn about the record types available in the United States and Ireland.
- 12:30 pm – lunch break
- 1:45 pm – “Finding Women in Your Family Tree!” Identify the best strategies for locating and writing about female ancestors.
- 3:15 pm – “Strategies for Effective Use of the Internet” Learn tips that are helpful for online genealogical research.
A former regional manager for Apple Computer, Moughty has been conducting family research for more than 25 years. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and served as chair of the Professional Management Conference (2005-2008) and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. She is also affiliated with Genealogy.Coach, specializing in Irish research.
Moughty attended the National Institute for Genealogical Research at the National Archives, the Third and Fourth Irish Genealogical Congress in Ireland, the Salt Lake Institute – Irish Research, and the Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research at Samford University, where she was an instructor for the Irish course in 2011.
(The genealogy symposium is presented with the generous support of the Friends of George Memorial Library. Proceeds from the Friends of the Library book sales and annual membership dues help to underwrite the costs of special programming and various cultural and educational events at the library.
The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required.
