Mother of 5’s law school pics went viral
Ieshia Champs has been appointed Assistant County Attorney to work in the Children’s Protection Practice Group. Champs was sworn in on January 9 at the Harris County Attorney’s Office at 1019 Congress in downtown Houston.
Champs previously interned with the County Attorney’s Office and received national notoriety when she graduated from the Thurgood Marshal School of Law at Texas Southern University and a photo of her and her five children went viral. Champs, who has experienced periods of homelessness and who is raising her children as a single mother, graduated from law school with honors before passing the Texas bar and beginning her career as an attorney with the County Attorney’s Office.
“Ms. Champs is an inspiration to all who are faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles in life,” County Attorney Vince Ryan said. “We are fortunate that her path has brought her to our Office where she can continue to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by Children’s Protectives Services in Harris County.”
Champs’ story has resonated with people across the country. She has appeared on the Steve Harvey Show, the CBS Evening News, the NBC Nightly News and countless local programs and affiliates.
“It is truly an honor to work among such amazing attorneys and to be a part of the Harris County Attorney’s Office,” Champs said.
The Children’s Protection Practice Group where Champs now serves as an Assistant County Attorney represents the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in actions involving abused and neglected children in Harris County. The Group seeks to obtain outcomes that are in the best interest of children.
The Harris County Attorney’s Office represents the County, its departments, elected and appointed officials, and employees in all civil matters that involve county business. The Office represents the Harris County Hospital District, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Harris County Appraisal Review Board, and the Greater 911 Emergency Network, which are separate legal entities. The Office also represents the State of Texas in mental health commitments and children’s protective services cases and assists Harris County in administration of the guardianship program, which cares for elderly and disabled individuals who are unable to care for themselves.
