KATY [November 7, 2018] – Bear Creek Elementary (BCE) school is celebrating the BIG 40 this week! Since 1978, the Katy Independent School District’s sixth elementary school has been committed to providing academic excellence to all its students as well as a family atmosphere. While the campus is rich in traditions and has numerous past accomplishments it is also creating a future of continued student success.
Today BCE is a high-performing Title I school which provides not just a traditional curriculum but it also offers ESL (English as a Second Language) as well as Bilingual and Special Education programs to qualifying students. The school is constantly expanding its curriculum with activities and opportunities to maximize student achievement. After Hurricane Harvey, the BCE Cougar Family found themselves displaced for two weeks after the community faced sewage issues. Every day they traveled to and from Paetow High School, which is located in the northwest quadrant of the district, opposite of BCE. Though it was one of the toughest hardships this school has faced, it ultimately was part of creating the “Katy Strong” spirit.
“I could not be more proud of our Cougar family. When Harvey hit, many families were still recovering from the ‘Tax Day’ floods,” said Dr. Lorena Zertuche, Principal of Bear Creek Elementary. “In the past 40 years, Bear Creek Elementary has demonstrated an unwavering passion while overcoming obstacles together which ultimately result in a fortified unity among the school and our community. We are the heart of this community. That is why the theme for our 40th celebration is ’40 and Facing the Future Together!’,” added Zertuche.
As part of their 40-year celebration, students, parents and the BCE community will be having a celebration on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, 2018.
