WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) penned a letter to President Trump in support of Governor Abbott’s request for federal disaster assistance following severe weather and flooding across Central Texas.
“This is the ninth major disaster to impact the state in the last three years and third in the past 14 months, following the historic devastation of Hurricane Harvey and the recent flooding in the Rio Grande Valley region,” the senators wrote. “The Governor and local officials have informed us that severe weather and flooding that began on September 10, 2018, and still continues, is beyond the capabilities of the state and affected local governments. We strongly support the Governor’s request and urge you to provide any and all emergency measures afforded by the approval of a disaster declaration.”

Mr. President:
The State of Texas, through the Office of the Governor, has made a formal request for a major disaster declaration as a result of severe weather and flooding, consistent with Title V of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Act. Governor Abbott has already issued a state disaster declaration for September and October severe weather.
This is the ninth major disaster to impact the state in the last three years and third in the past 14 months, following the historic devastation of Hurricane Harvey and the recent flooding in the Rio Grande Valley region. The Governor and local officials have informed us that severe weather and flooding that began on September 10, 2018, and still continues, is beyond the capabilities of the state and affected local governments.
