NAM Supports National Domestic Violence Awareness Month With Memorial Garden

HOUSTON— October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month and the Family Violence Center (FVC) at Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) is busy preparing for the 5th Annual “You Are Not Alone” campaign. This initiative, which includes the placing of flags in the Memorial Garden located in front of the main NAM Building located at 15555 Kuykendahl Road, Houston, TX 77090, strives to remind domestic violence victims and survivors that they are not alone in their situation and that there are resources and support available to them.

Over the last 6 years, Texas has seen an average of 121 women who have lost their lives each year due to domestic violence.  The Memorial Garden is a place of remembrance to honor those women and the families that suffered their loss.  Purple flags will be placed at the top of the garden to represent these women, and their stories.  The dedication ceremony will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.

The local community can offer encouragement to those who continue to struggle, by signing a yellow flag and placing it in the garden below the purple flags to remind them they “Are Not Alone.”  Flags are available, FREE of charge, at NAM.  Please contact the FVC at 281-885-4673 for additional information.

The Family Violence Center is dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence by assisting victims of domestic and sexual violence through crisis intervention, long-term support services, and through community violence and awareness prevention education. In the fiscal year 2016-2017, the FVC received more than 7,400 hotline calls from victims in crisis and individuals seeking assistance. They also offer year-round programs, workshops and different events that bring awareness to the domestic violence problem in the area.
