AUSTIN, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $6.2 million for the Texas Department of Transportation support activities following Hurricane Harvey.
The department set up temporary base camps in seven locations, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Sugarland, Beaumont, Refugio, Yoakum and Liberty, to provide lodging and meals to first responders and emergency officials after Harvey’s landfall. The camps provided needed lodging and food services that were not available in the area after the hurricane.
The $6.2 million federal grant funds the entire scope of the camp operations.
This funding comes from FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program which reimburses communities for actions taken in the immediate response and during recovery from a disaster. Eligible applicants include states, federally recognized tribal governments, U.S. territories, local governments, and certain private nonprofit organizations.
FEMA obligates funding for these projects directly to the state. It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-recipients receive these awards. Following the state’s review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentation, they will provide funds to the sub-recipients on a reimbursable basis.
