KATY [July 2, 2018] – Two masterpieces created by Katy ISD students will be part of the Texas Youth Art Month Exhibit, soon-to-be on display at the Texas Capitol. The annual tradition compiles the artwork of students from all over the state. This year, out of the hundreds of pieces participating in the event, two paintings created by Katy ISD students were chosen by Governor Greg Abbott’s wife, First Lady Cecilia Abbott.
Wolman Elementary (RJWE) Benjamin Hervey’s art piece entitled “Owl Eyes” and Seven Lakes High School Yanran Wang’s “Western Trinkets” will be shown at Governor Abbott’s Business Office. This yearly tradition was established in the 1990s and is coordinated by the Texas Art Education Association. Each year, students from across Texas seek to be part of this prestigious recognition. During the distinguished 2018 Governor’s Gallery reception, school children in grades pre-k through high school had the opportunity to unveil their masterpieces.
“Our Katy ISD students put vast amounts of hours, as well as effort, into perfecting their works of art,” said Assistant Director of Fine Arts Mitzi Jones. “To be able to display their hard work at such a respected and significant place for our state is an honor our students and the Fine Arts Department cherishes greatly,” added Jones.
The Katy ISD Fine Arts Department encourages students to develop a vocabulary for art, and the skill to graphically
express and communicate their own inner ideas and attitudes by creating original artwork.
