Olson Statement On Trump N. Korea Meeting

Washington, DC – Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) issued the following statement in response to the historic meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un in Singapore to negotiate North Korean denuclearization:

“I am deeply appreciative of efforts to achieve peace in the region. The fact that we are still technically at war with one another dating back to the 1950s is a sign of how troubled our relationship has been with North Korea. I am glad that we are making steps toward peace, and that President Trump raised both denuclearization and human rights as issues that need to be addressed. We should not be naïve—North Korea is a brutal regime with a long history of violence and deception—but clearly the status quo is not working. Decades of diplomacy from a distance hasn’t worked. While there are still many details that need to be filled in, we should all be glad that President Trump is working on a new approach to achieve peace.”
