WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Masterpiece Cakeshop’s owner, Jack Phillips, reasoning that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated his constitutional rights by acting with hostility to his religious faith.
“Today, the Supreme Court took a stand for religious liberty against the unconstitutional demands of an oppressive bureaucracy. The decision’s wide 7-2 margin shows that the justices recognize what millions of Americans have known since the first Constitutional Convention: whether a baker, a teacher, a doctor, or clergy, the government may not force any American to violate his sincerely held religious beliefs. I look forward to the day when the First Amendment rights of all Americans are recognized and reaffirmed at the Supreme Court and in every statehouse across the nation.”
Prior to the argument of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Sen. Cruz led a group of Senators in filing an amicus brief to the Supreme Court defending Jack Phillips’ freedom of speech and religious liberty.
