Fort Bend County Libraries will present an introductory program for anyone interested in starting the hobby of coin-collecting. The program, “Coin-Collecting for Beginners,” will take place on Saturday, May 19, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., in the Meeting Room at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.
William J. Shelton, Sr. of Rosenberg will provide a basic overview of the different types of coins minted in the United States, and how to go about starting a coin collection. He will also discuss the different types of marks to look for on coins, how to grade coins, and how to protect and preserve the coins.
“I started the coin collection in 1971, when I was 12 years old. I happened to notice the date of 1919 on a cent I had acquired while at the bowling alley in Rosenberg. Curiosity took over, and I was consumed with the need for knowledge about coins,” says Shelton. “I have the desire to obtain an example of every date and mint mark business-strike coin made in the 20th century. Hardly a month will go by without another coin added to my collection.”
A portion of Shelton’s coin collection will be on display.
The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 281-395-1311 or the library system’s Communications office at 281-633-4734.
