Mayde Creek High School Theatre and Fine Arts Recognized for Excellence

Houston, TX – March 19, 2018  The past two weeks has brought recognition to the Mayde Creek High School Theatre Company and its students in three separate competitions.

On Saturday March 10, Mayde Creek High School Theatre Company participated in the District 19 6A UIL One Act Play competition.  Mayde Creek’s production of Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson was ranked as first place and selected to be one of three advancing plays to the Bi-District competition.  Cast and crew members also received individual awards including: Outstanding Technician, junior Isabel Vandernoort; Honorable Mention, junior Savannah James; and All-Star Cast Members, junior Samuel Oladejo and senior Bailye Salas.  And junior Glendaliris Torres-Greaux was awarded Best Actress Award. Bi-District Contest will take place at the Morton Ranch High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday March 24.   The contest begins at 1:00 p.m. with Mayde Creek performing at 4:00 p.m.

A collaboration of theatre, choir, band, and orchestra programs, Mayde Creek’s musical production of In the Heights by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes participated in this year’s Tommy Tune Awards.  On March 18, the Tommy Tune Awards announced nominations.  Mayde Creek received four nominations including:  Choir Directors Ruben Alcala and Jessica Shine for Best Musical Direction, sophomore Brooke Chippi for Best Lighting Design, and freshman Kim Luong and senior Jaime Castiblanco for Best Scenic Design.  Junior Glendaliris Torres-Greaux received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.  The 16th Annual Tommy Tune Awards from Theatre Under the Stars will take place Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

On Monday March 19, Mayde Creek junior Samuel Oladejo was named  one of eight students are finalists from across the nation in the Thespian Filmworks program for student arts journalists.As a finalist, Samuel receives complimentary registration to attend the International Thespian Festival held this summer in Lincoln, Nebraska and will collaborate in the development of an original film.
