LSU veterinary students and alumni pursue advanced training

BATON ROUGE—Veterinary students and clinicians who wish to specialize in a particular area and become board certified must participate in the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP). The American Association of Veterinary Clinicians sponsors the VIRMP to expedite the selection of interns and residents for participating veterinary schools, colleges, and institutions.

Congratulations to the following students, House Officers (our hospital interns and residents) and alumni who were successful in obtaining an internship through the VIRMP. They are listed alphabetically with their graduation year, hometown and the location of their internship or residency:

Ana Aghili, DVM (LSU SVM 2015), from West Vancouver, Canada, will do an emergency critical care residency at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine;

Samantha Altemus Bailey, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Houston, Texas, will do a small animal internal medicine residency at Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences;

H. Grady Bailin, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Little Rock, Ark., will do a small animal residency in emergency critical care medicine at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine;

Morgan Rash Biggo (Class of 2018), from Biloxi, Miss., will do a small animal medicine/surgery internship at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences;

Maggie Buller, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Breaux Bridge, La., will do a small animal internal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine;

Caroline Burglass, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Metairie, La., will do a residency in large animal medicine (equine emphasis) at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine;

Lisa Ciolino, DVM (LSU SVM 2010), from New Orleans, La., will do a small animal integrative medicine and rehabilitation internship at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine;

Michele Edwards (Class of 2018), from Binghamton, N.Y., will do a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Nashville Veterinary Specialists;

Christian Folk (Class of 2018), from Baton Rouge, La., will do a small animal rotating internship at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine;

Hannah Ghindea (Class of 2018), from Port Washington, Ohio, rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Coral Springs Animal Hospital;

Keith Jarrett, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Metairie, La., will do a small animal surgery specialty internship at Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences;

Jiaqi Li (Class of 2018), from Foshan, Guangdong, China, will do a small animal rotating internship at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine;

Bradley Lytle (Class of 2018), from New Orleans, La., will do a rotating internship in small animal medicine, surgery and emergency at VCA Hospital and Referral Center in Albuquerque, N.M.;

Brittany Madere (Class of 2018), from Luling, La., will do a small animal rotating internship at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine;

David Mahoney (Class of 2018), from Metairie, La., will do a small animal rotating internship at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine;

Matthew Martin (Class of 2018), from Asheville, N.C., will do a small animal rotating medicine and surgery internship at Bluepearl Veterinary Partners Nashville;

Brittney McDonald (Class of 2018), from Port Allen, La., will do a small animal rotating internship at MedVet Medical and Cancer Center for Pets – Louisiana in Metairie, La.;

Corinne Plough (Class of 2018), from New Orleans, La., will do a rotating internship in small animal medicine, surgery, and emergency at Friendship Hospital for Animals;

Danielle Powers, DVM (LSU SVM 2017), from Lafayette, La., will do a rotating small animal internship at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colo.;

Kelsie Stovall (Class of 2018), from New Orleans, La., will do an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Animal Medical Hospital; and

Whitney York-Giger (Class of 2018), from Greensboro, N.C., will do a rotating internship in small animal medicine at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

The VIRMP follows principles established by the Physicians National Intern and Resident Matching Program and is structured on an established and functioning system. The prospective intern or resident chooses the school of his or her choice and, because of the marked competition for positions, the student is advised to apply to more than one institution. The student fulfills the application criteria of each institution and submits his/her applications directly to the institutions. The institution, through its selection process, ranks the applicants according to its criteria.

Some internships and residencies are available outside of the VIRMP. Congratulations to the following students, House Officers and alumni who received internships or residencies outside of the match program:

Cara Edwards Bankson (Class of 2018), from Shreveport, La., will do an internship at Reata Equine Hospital in Weatherford, Texas;

Annie Bauman (Class of 2018), from Little Rock, Ark., will do a clinical pathology residency at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine;

Stephen Crane (Class of 2018), from Kenner, La., will do a clinical pathology residency at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine;

Shasta Flanigan (Class of 2018), from Maynard, Ark., will do a rotating equine internship at Tennessee Equine Hospital in Thompson’s Station, Tenn.;

Kelsey Koenig (Class of 2018), from Ellicott City, Md., will do an internship at Manor Equine Hospital in Monkton, Md.;

Ani Sipos (Class of 2018), from Abita Springs, La., will do an internship in medicine and management of nonhuman primates at the Mannheimer Foundation in Homestead, Fla.; and

Alissa Walsh St. Blanc, DVM (LSU SVM 2016), from Shreveport, La., will do a surgery residency at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
