Northwest Assistance Ministries Hosts Health Care For The Homeless Mobile Units

HOUSTON—On Thursday Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) hosted a Harris Health System Mobile Health Unit, which provides medical services for homeless individuals.

The Harris Health System Homeless Program Mobile Unit will be on-site at NAM the third Thursday of each month throughout 2018. No appointment is necessary.

Hosting the Harris Health System Mobile Health Units is part of a joint effort between NAM and the Health Care for the Homeless Program (HCHP) to reach out to people without housing in the community.

The mobile unit was available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the NAM parking lot and provided medical services to nine patients. Each patient received a thorough check-up and referrals were made based on the assessment. Prescriptions were written if needed, and paid for by NAM’s Children’s Clinic Community-Centered Health Homes (CCHH) program.

Services made available through HCHP include general primary care, immunizations, health education, podiatry, HIV/Hepatitis C testing, annual physicals, and diabetes and hypertension screening. NAM clients working with a housing program, including coordinated access, may utilize these on-site services.

Northwest Assistance Ministries is a non-profit, community-based social service agency that strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors. NAM provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention. During its last fiscal year, NAM touched the lives of more than 129,000 people through its many programs and services.
