Oakbend Medical Center Weathers Recent Ice Storm

Employees Eunice Caluag, Nila Milanco, Jacob Diaz and Sheree Oehlke were happy to be working during the ice storm

Richmond, Texas… While the Post Office claims the motto “Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” that same motto could be used by hospitals its doctors.  Before the temperatures began to plummet and overcast skies began to produce rain, sleet and snow, the medical staff at OakBend Medical Center began to prepare for freezing temperatures and treacherous roads.

Many of the staff came to work on Tuesday with blankets, pillows and a change of clothes, prepared to spend the night at the hospital to make sure that the current patients received care without interruption and to tend to patients coming to the emergency room. Hospital staff stayed to make sure patients could be registered for outpatient surgery on Wednesday without any delays.

Some doctors and staff stayed overnight to care for patients and to be on-call in case of emergencies while others left their homes several hours early to make sure that they had time to maneuver the icy roadways on their way to the hospital.  During the 24 hours of inclement weather, the hospital remained open and fully operational and the emergency rooms saw over 125 patients.

“I am grateful to our staff for their commitment to caring for the community.  Many went above and beyond to make arrangements for their families so they could focus on our patients and their needs, and they did it all with a smile on their faces and positive attitudes,” stated Joe Freudenberger, CEO of OakBend Medical Center.
