Katy ISD Seeks Community’s Input on Potential Transportation Changes

January 18, 2018 – As Katy Independent School District continues to grow, providing transportation services to the increasing number of students arriving to the District has become one of many top priorities.  Katy ISD is currently facing transportation challenges which include recruiting and retaining drivers for its current routes, as well as safety concerns with congested traffic in some areas within Katy.  As part of the Your District, Your Voice initiative, input from parents, students, staff and the community is being sought through a Transportation Sustainability Survey which will be available from January 17 to 31.

Currently, Katy ISD utilizes a transportation model that involves a two-bell schedule where elementary students who live outside of a half-mile radius and secondary students who live outside of a 1-mile radius are eligible for such services.  However, the District’s driver shortage has impacted Katy ISD’s ability to sustain its existing transportation model.  Two options will be presented in the survey for participants to consider:

Option 1 Transportation Model Option 2 Transportation Model
Eligibility-
Elementary:    2-mile turn-by-turn
Secondary:    2-mile turn-by-turn
Eligibility-
Elementary:    1/2-mile radius
Secondary:    1-mile radius
Bell Schedule – Two-Bell Bell Schedule – Multi-Bell

(different start and end times for elementary, junior high and high school)

This week, parents, students, staff and community members will receive the survey via the email address they have on file with the District.  Receipt of the survey does not necessarily mean that the recipient will be impacted by transportation changes.  However, everyone’s participation is important and will play a crucial role in the Katy ISD Board of Trustees’ decision making process.

If one does not receive a survey link by the end of this week, they can contact K12Insight, the external research firm conducting the survey, at SouthwestRegion@k12insight.com .
