Katy Challenging Seven Lakes

By Tom Behrens

The Katy Lady Tigers only loss has come against Seven Lakes 41-22 in December. They will play again Jan. 23 at Katy High School. Mark the date as this should be a great game.

Katy started 2018 off right with wins over Morton Ranch 58-32 and Tompkins 65-46. With the wind over district rival Tompkins the Tigers improved to 4-1 in 19-6A behind Keke Cleveland’s 21 points, five rebounds and three steals. Savannah May added 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Alana Thompson added 15 points. Tompkins fell to 2-2 in 19-6A.

A strong defense and consistency on the offense created great opportunities for the Lady Tigers in their victory over The Village, 73-58.  Keke Cleveland led the Tigers with 22 points and 2 steals. Savannah May had a solid game with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Allana Thompson chipped in 13 points 2 steals and 4 assists.  Cassidy Howard did a great job scoring 12 points.

A great defensive intensity in the second half helped Katy to pull away from a relentless Mayde Creek team, 70-35. Savannah May had a great all-around game with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Amira Layeni chipped in 13 points hitting three 3’s in the second half. The Tigers close out the first round of district with a 5-1 record and will start the second round of district on Tuesday night at home against Taylor.

Taylor after a close win over Morton Ranch, 51-48 stopped a two game losing streak and  improved to 3-2 in district. The Mustangs of Taylor went on to defeat Tompkins 82-63 on Jan. 9.

“With the parody we have in our district this year, and in years past, any team can win this district,” said Coach Spurlock of Seven Lakes.

As the girls go into the second round against district opponents Morton Ranch, Mayde Creek and Cinco Ranch all have 1-5 district records.
