These funds will strengthen law enforcement officials’ efforts to protect our communities’
HOUSTON, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement praising Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ $98 million grant announced today that provides funding for law enforcement agencies across the country. Nine law enforcement agencies in Texas will receive grant funding, allowing them to hire an additional 98 full-time law enforcement officers. Of those 179 law enforcement agencies across the country that will receive grant funding, 80 percent agreed to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in their detention facilities.
“I want to thank Attorney General Sessions for his commitment to the rule of law, and community policing,” Sen. Cruz said. “These funds will strengthen law enforcement officials’ efforts to protect our communities. I particularly commend General Sessions for giving priority consideration to grant applicants that agreed to cooperate with immigration officers, cooperation that will be crucial in helping to end the violent crime that stems from illegal immigration. Just yesterday, our state faced yet another heartbreak with the attack on two of our border patrol agents in Big Bend that resulted in the death of Border Patrol Agent Rogelio Martinez. We are grateful for the incredible courage and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe. I remain fully committed to working with the Border Patrol, and law enforcement agencies across our state, to ensure they are equipped with the resources they need.”
