Harris County Animal Shelter to Open After the Storm

The Shelter will open with limited hours after Hurricane Harvey

The Harris County Animal Shelter will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, August 29, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow owners to reclaim lost pets that may have entered the shelter on or before Saturday, August 26, 2017.  Fortunately, the shelter has not flooded from the Hurricane Harvey’s torrential rains and all animals are safe. However, minimal staff are able to get into the shelter safely to offer full services.

The three-day hold requirement for stray animals has been temporarily lifted in response to this disaster in an effort to move animals out of the shelter as soon as possible.

Please note that no additional animals have entered the shelter since Saturday, August 26, 2017. So, if your pet was lost after that day, it is not in the shelter at this time.

Due to limited staff and services the shelter will:

  • Not have phone answering services
  • Not be able to take in additional animals

Regular shelter services will resume when adequate staffing can be restored and will be determined on a day-by-day basis.
