OAG Statement on Supreme Court Justice’s Temporary Stay of Ruling on  Texas’ Congressional Map

Ken Paxton

AUSTIN – The Office of the Attorney General today issued the following statement after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito granted a temporary stay of a district court ruling that required two of Texas’ 36 congressional districts (27 and 35) to be redrawn:

“We’re encouraged by Justice Alito’s decision today,” Director of Communications Marc Rylander said. “We remain hopeful that the entire Court will allow Texas to continue to use the maps that were in place the last three election cycles.”

While issuing a temporary stay, Justice Alito gave challengers of the congressional maps until September 5 to answer arguments presented in Attorney General Paxton’s Supreme Court stay application. A ruling by a three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in San Antonio prevented the state from using the same court-adopted maps in 2018 that were in place in each of the last three election cycles. Attorney General Paxton appealed to the Supreme Court last week after the district court turned down his stay request and ordered a hearing in early September to consider remedial plans to redraw the congressional maps.
