Forty-nine students from seven Houston-area technical colleges and institutions received $200,000 in vocational scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the 2017-18 academic year.
“The Vocational Scholarship Awards program was established in 2015 to assist students pursuing degrees in technical fields,” said Joel Cowley, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo president and CEO. “We are proud to support our local colleges as they prepare students of all ages and backgrounds to fill the need for skilled workers and contribute to our economy.”
Each year, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo selects local colleges and institutions to receive funds based on the type and cost of technical programs offered. For 2017, the Rodeo is supporting Houston Community College, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lee College, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College and Texas State Technical College.
In three years, the Rodeo has awarded $600,000 in support of technical education. Each school that receives funding through the Vocational Scholarship Awards program is responsible for the selection of recipients and disbursement of scholarship funds.
Since the program’s inception, more than 150 students have received financial assistance from the Rodeo, approximately 50 students have graduated, and the remaining expect to complete their studies at the end of the spring 2018 semester.
