Learning Differences Homeschool Network of Southeast Texas is homeschool support and social group is for anyone in the northwest Houston metro area homeschooling one or more kids with any diagnosis that affects learning. The group is centered in the Cypress, TX, area with members in Cypress, Katy, Spring, Tomball, Woodlands, and northwest Houston.
The group is especially geared toward very-high-functioning kids, but any kid with learning differences who wants to be social is welcome. Currently the group includes 46 families with 65 kids ranging in age from 6 to 18. Typical learning diagnoses in the group include ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, autistic spectrum disorders, anxiety disorder, OCD, bipolar or other mood disorders, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and language processing disorders.
The group has weekly social activities and field trips for the kids, and regular parent support meetings, sometimes with speakers who address issues related to homeschooling kids with learning differences. The September parent meeting will host a speaker who is a specialist in special needs law.
“Our emphasis is on having fun activities all ages can enjoy, and where the kids can make friends and parents can connect with other parents who face similar issues in homeschooling,” says founder Tammi Wright. “We especially emphasize providing an environment where ‘quirky’ behaviors are a non-issue, and where children are welcome and accepted regardless of their social challenges and academic level.”
Activities the group has done over the past school year include bowling, swimming, archery, tour of a fish hatchery, zoo trip, game day, park scavenger hunt, show and tell day, ice skating, edible kitchen science day, volunteering at homeless shelter, Halloween party, kite flying day, splash pad, park day, reptile show, and many more. Some of those will be repeated in the coming school year with a number of new activities added.

Membership requirements are: (1) be actively homeschooling one or more children with a learning difference, (2) complete a membership form, (3) pay $20 per family annual dues by August 31 or upon joining if joining after August 31, and (4) ask to join the group Facebook page.
