The HPRA lunch speaker this Friday is Helwig Van Der Grinten, founder of the Houston Coalition Against Red Light Cameras. “Captain Van”, who has a seafaring background, will give an update on his lawsuit to remove the red light cameras in Sugar Land which are associated nationally with increased accidents from cars hitting vehicles whose drivers stop abruptly. The captain lost in district court but his attorney, Scott Stewart, has filed an appeal citing the city’s failure to abide by the Texas constitution and statutory requirements to do engineering studies where the “cams” are positioned, and failure to set up a citizen review committee.
