First book in Debbie Henderson Maestas’ ‘Kay and Ray’ series published
‘Kay and Ray Help a Neighbor’ presents the story of the Good Samaritan in a contemporary setting
HOUSTON – The first book in Debbie Henderson Maestas’ planned series, “Kay and Ray Help a Neighbor: The Good Samaritan” (published by WestBow Press) re-envisions the story of the Good Samaritan in a contemporary setting.
A young girl named Kay narrates the story of a day her older brother Ray taught her the importance of helping a neighbor in need, exemplifying the Good Samaritan. After seeing a couple of people walk away from the park nervously, Kay and Ray encounter a man in the park who had been beaten up and is in need of help. Ray calls 911, Kay offers a blanket, they wait until the police and ambulance come and they explain what happened to the cops. Later that night when Ray reads the story of the Good Samaritan, Kay is amazed by the similarities and is proud of how they acted.
“I want readers to take away from reading my book the realization that even though Bible stories were written many, many years ago the lessons and principles are relevant in today’s society and we need to practice them,” Maestas says.

About the Author
Debbie Henderson Maestas was born in New Jersey lived in Edison until she was 9, went to high school in Tempe, Arizona, and went to college at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. Maestas has a Master of Arts in teaching and has worked with children for over 25 years in various capacities; she has taught kindergarten for 9 years and currently teaches pre-kindergarten in a Christian preschool.
