(Houston, May 17, 2017). Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) celebrated the much-anticipated 2017 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.
More than 200 guests enjoyed laughter and camaraderie on April 20, 2017 thanks to the generosity of Bobby Shirley, owner of Shirley Acres. Every year for the last six years, NAM has honored its volunteers with a delicious luncheon served by NAM staff at Bobby’s beautiful venue, Shirley Acres located at 217 Woerner Road, Houston, Texas. The event is in gratitude for the thousands of volunteer hours donated by more than 2,000 community volunteers that help support NAM’s mission of Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
“I am so grateful to all the volunteers that come to NAM every day,” explained Carole Little, NAM’s President and CEO. “This luncheon is an opportunity to honor the unsung heroes of NAM and we know that without them we couldn’t possibly do what we do. Behind every success story, every client helped, every dream fulfilled, there’s a volunteer that made that possible and I am so grateful to every single volunteer for all they do to help our neighbors in need.”
The Kentucky Derby-themed luncheon, “Our Hearts Race for You!” delighted guests with this year’s entertainer, Robby Bennett. Bennett is a well-known Houston magician who brought exciting new tricks and comedy to this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

More than 2,000 volunteers serve NAM on a regular basis. They are young and old, Boys & Girl Scouts, executives, young moms and great-grandfathers. They bring experiences and expertise as varied as the world around us, and put those skills to work in hundreds of roles at NAM. The federal government assigns a dollar value to volunteer hours, and NAM’s volunteers contribute more than $1 million worth of service annually.
Northwest Assistance Ministries is a nonprofit, community-based social service agency that strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors. NAM provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention. In the last fiscal year, NAM touched the lives of more than 114,000 people through its many programs and services.
