Mendez Re-Elected to City Council

Jimmy Mendez

Recently, The Katy News asked Natasha Mendez if she would like to interview her father after his re-election to City Council. She said yes. Natasha has said that she would eventually like to follow in her father’s footsteps and get involved in Katy politics. She attends many of the council meetings with her dad. After talking to Natasha, I can assure you she knows what’s going on in this community as much as the council members.

The following is what Natasha has come up with:

• How does it feel to be re-elected to your third and final term?
WOW, I don’t know what to say. I’m just glad that I didn’t have to do a run-off. It’s very rare to have a three way race not end in a run-off because one of the three must get over 50% of the vote to prevent it. I really dislike campaigning because it re-directs my attention from working on important things to focusing on frivolous things such as putting out signs and soliciting support. It also forces me to toot my own horn and that goes against my grain.
• What can we expect to see from you over the next two years?
Even though I hated campaigning, some good came out of it. I realized that I had been so busy working to get all of the projects going that Katy needed, that I didn’t even think about putting in a due date, incentives for early completion or penalties for late completion. I also learned a lot from my opponents and will be working on making our city website a lot more user friendly and easier to find things. Also, getting back in touch with the people of Katy was both refreshing and sobering. It is interesting to me to see how people both view me and view what I have done.
• After your two years in office, do you have any plans to seek another seat such as the “At Large” or the “Mayor’s” seat?
Like I said before; I hate campaigning. I originally ran for this seat to fix the flooding problems that I felt the city was not properly addressing; and that is exactly what I have been doing. I absolutely did not get into this for a career. I have no plans to run for anything after this.
• Is there anything else that you want the reader to know?
Yes, if we do not know that you have a problem with something, we cannot address it. All of us on the council are very approachable and take our responsibilities very seriously. We are your representatives; we do not work for the city.

I know that this is a short interview, but if Natasha changes her mind about going into politics, she can come to work at the Katy News anytime. By the way, congratulations Jimmy Mendez.
