KVPAC’s Community Theatre Wins Competition At Region VI AACTFEST And Will Represent Region VI At National Competition

Representing Answers at the AACTFEST Region VI Awards Ceremony: Gregory Magyar (Actor), Joshua Schorejs (Director) and Kari Perez (Production Stage Manager)

Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center (KVPAC) Community Theatre Encore Players won the Region VI American Association of Community Theatre Festival (AACTFest) competition in Lafeyette, LA on Saturday, April 8, 2017 with its production of Answers by Tom Topor.

KVPAC Encore Players will go on to represent Region VI (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) at the National AACTFest Competition June 26 – July 1, 2017 in Rochester, MN.

In addition to winning first place, special distinctions were awarded to the KVPAC Answers cast for Excellence in Set Design; Excellence in Direction to Joshua Schorejs; and Excellence in Acting to Gregory J. Magyar, KVPAC’s Executive Artistic Director.

“We are proud of all the community theaters in Region VI who competed in the Quad and Regional AACTFEST competitions,” said Gregory Magyar, “and we are honored and excited to represent Region VI and Texas Nonprofit Theaters (TNT) at the national level in Rochester.”

The journey began when KVPAC won the Texas AACTFest at TNT’s Annual Conference in March. They were honored to represent the state of Texas at the Region VI AACTFest, with their production of Answers by Tom Topor.

Answers is a short play about a man (James Duncan) having been detained for questioning, in a crime about which he claims to know nothing, and is grilled by two persistent police officers (Gregory Magyar and Trenton Stephenson). They call him “Byron” (although he insists this is not his name) and their initially bantering attitude turns steadily more ominous as they attempt to force a confession. Ultimately, in a scene of shattering intensity, they succeed—but disturbing questions linger. Have justice and truth indeed been served? Or has another hapless victim been sacrificed to society’s inexorable need for retribution at any cost?

This summer at the National AACTFest Competition, KVPAC will compete against the best community theater groups in the US. Twelve community theaters, the winners of their state and regional contests, will bring their productions to Rochester, MN for consideration June 26-July 1, 2017.
