New book outlines Gestalt theory and its practices today

Author reviews gestalt theory inception and its practices in psychology today in ‘Scientific Gestalt’

Author Ray Edwards presents a review and evaluation of gestalt work in scientific terms in his new book, ‘Scientific Gestalt’ (published by AuthorHouse)

Gestalt theory, in its simplest terms, is commonly defined as the whole is greater than the sum of its part. In his book, Edwards chronicles the development of gestalt theory, dating back to the turn of the 19th century up to its uses today. Using case studies and the research of noted scientists such as Kurt Goldstein and Wolfgang Köhler, he analyzes scientific gestalt in patients suffering from post-traumatic stress, as well as depression and how applying scientific gestalt to these patients can help them recover.

An excerpt from “Scientific Gestalt”:

“Scientists of the early 20th century (Goldstein, Koffka, Köhler, Lewin and Wertheimer) recognized a tendency of information to be recognized in whole unites and called then gestalts. These people were initially interested in perception and also recognized that each gestalt consisted of an active component, termed the figure, and a context, the ground.”

Readers have responded positively to this and previous versions of “Scientific Gestalt.” Malcolm Parlett, the first editor of the British Gestalt Journal, says, “This is a thought-provoking read, a quirky and vividly argued alternative version of Gestalt therapy that challenges most of the assumptions of contemporary Gestalt psychotherapy and will send many a reader flying to a computer to type a rebuttal.”
