San Jacinto College will serve as host for the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV Softball Tournament April 28 – May 1. Alexis DeLeon Morton Ranch HS along with sophomore catcher Gabby Gonzalez (Baytown/Sterling HS) are leading the team heading into the regional tournament.
Sophomore Anish Sriniketh of Tompkins won the boys singles, beating Memorial’s Andrew Esses, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final. Both players are state qualifiers.
Katy Taylor needed a tie breaker in the boys doubles final to beat Seven Lakes 7-6, 1-6, 7-6. But it was the team of senior Reese Costis and sophomore Rohit Patil that prevailed over Allen Chen and Sai Polepally of Seven Lakes.
“We know Seven Lakes well, they’re in our district and we played them in district finals,” Costis said. “We beat them a lot easier than this. So, we’re really surprised. They are playing really well. That was a tough match. We did not think we were coming out of that.”
In the middle of the third set, Taylor was down 4-1 before rallying. Both Taylor and Seven Lakes are state qualifiers.
In a semifinal match, Seven Lakes beat top-seed Memorial, who was previously unbeaten this year. Chen and Polepally upset the Mustangs 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 to reach the regional final.
