the-katy-news-logoLady Spartans celebrate fifth consecutive District Championship. Seven Lakes which is only nine years old, has lost two district games in the last four seasons. The Spartans advanced to the Region III final in 2013 before losing to Clear Springs. In 2012 and 2014, the Spartans were area-round finalists. Last season, they were regional quarterfinalists.
Excluding Cypress Ranch, the Lady Spartans have played five of the top 15 teams in the state before it began district competition. Head coach, Angela Spurlock said the girls benefitted in playing a tough non-district schedule.
The Lady Spartans make it look easy at times. They are 57-3 in district play during the last five years following the victory against Morton Ranch. Seven Lakes started strong with three victories at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational. The Lady Spartans followed with a third-place finish at the Phillips 66 Katy Classic, with only a semifinal loss to Tompkins preventing a repeat final appearance. An 8-0 start pushed a remarkable district winning streak to 24 games over three seasons before Katy won 33-31 at SLHS on Jan. 26.
On Feb. 5 the Lady Spartans of Seven Lakes secured at least a tie for the District Championship by defeating Mayde Creek Lady Rams, 72-19. Four nights later the championship was theirs when they knocked off Morton Ranch 56-18.
The Lady Tigers secured the number two seed with an exciting 53-52 victory against Tompkins on Feb. 5. The teams exchanged leads several times during the final minute before Kelley Skinner found Laura Rowe for the game-winning basket with three seconds left. Rowe had a game high of 28 points and Cait Calland added 11 for Katy.
Tompkins received 16 points from both Kendall Rollins and Brittany Panetti, as well as 11 from Sarah Goss defeating Taylor 44-31.
Even though the Cougars lost to Katy, 53-43, Cinco Ranch secured the fourth seed with a record of 6-6 over a Taylor record of 5-7. Taylor had defeated Morton Ranch 56-42, keeping its playoff hopes alive. If Taylor could defeat Tompkins in the season finale and with a little help from Katy defeating Cinco Ranch, Taylor would secure the fourth seed. Katy defeated Cinco Ranch, but the Lady Mustangs fell to Tompkins.
Seven Lakes finished regular season play with an overall record of 25-9. The Lady Spartans, 11-1; Tigers, 11-2; Falcons, 8-5; and Cougars, 6-6, begin Playoffs on either Feb. 15 or 16 against teams as not yet decided. Final District 19-6A standings have Taylor at 5-7; Morton Ranch at 2-10; Mayde Creek 0-12.
