Building on a record-breaking first four years, the fifth annual Houston American Diabetes Association (ADA) Tour de Cure presented by the Dignity Memorial® network, set for Sept. 21, 2013, at AutoNation Nissan Katy, proudly announces the Honorary Chairman of this year’s event is Chris Canetti, President of the Houston Dynamo.
Houston’s one-day cycling fundraiser is the ADA’s fastest-growing Tour in the country, raising a staggering $2 million during four years of pedaling. Registration has grown from over 900 cyclists in 2009 to 1800 in 2012. With new support from the Houston Dynamo, continued growth for the fifth annual Houston Tour de Cure is promising.
“I’m honored to be representing the Dynamo and assisting the American Diabetes Association with this year’s Tour de Cure,” Canetti said. “This is an important health issue in our society, and we are pleased to be playing a small role in creating awareness and raising funds to help the fight.”
With more than 26 million children and adults in the United States suffering from diabetes, the disease is worthy of a fight. One-third of those affected are not aware they have the condition, and more than 79 million Americans are teetering on the pre-diabetic cliff. Every 21 seconds someone in this country receives the diabetes diagnosis. If current trends continue, one in three children born today will develop this chronic and life-threatening disease in their lifetime.
The ADA’s Tour de Cure is a nationwide campaign that also takes that fight seriously. Active in 44 states, the Tours raise money to help fund diabetes re-search, education and advocacy. In 2011, more than 55,000 cyclists in 80 tour events raised more than $18 million to support the mission of ADA: To prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by dia-betes. The Houston Tour de Cure is more than a bike ride. It is designed as a healthy, fun and engaging event for the entire family. Routes of 10, 27, 47, 63 and 100 miles offer options for novice, occasional and expert cyclists and are safe and fully supported with route marshals, SAG vehicles, mechanical support, and rest stops stocked with hydration and a variety of snacks. At the finish line, riders are welcomed with cheering volunteers, complimentary food and beverages, live music, a massage tent, and family-friendly activities.
All ride routes will start and finish in front of Katy Mills Mall at AutoNation Nissan Katy, 25550 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77494. Registration is now open for individuals and teams. Interested riders may visit www.diabetes.org/tour, select Texas and then Houston event to sign-up. Early bird registration is $15 per person through June 24; $25 thereafter.
